ALICANTE AND THE CLASSICAL GUITAR
The classical guitar or Spanish guitar has had, for five centuries, a very intense relationship with the Spanish part of the Mediterranean Sea. This relationship has been particularly noticeable in Alicante from the nineteenth century up to the present, being the land where important guitarists and teachers were born or established themselves.
Testimony of this legacy are guitarists and institutions that are part of the history of the classical guitar such as Trinidad Huerta, Francisco Tárrega, la Orquesta Wagneriana de Alicante, Quintín Esquembre, José Tomás and José Luis González.
In recent decades, festivals and events dedicated to the guitar have taken place in the province of Alicante with extraordinary international impact, and students from all over the world come to Alicante to study guitar at the Conservatorio Superior de Música "Oscar Esplá".
INTRODUCTION
Convinced that the classical guitar deserves to be on the highest level among the musical instruments, the University of Alicante organizes the Master in Classical Guitar Performance from January to June, in collaboration with the Alicante Town Hall and with the enthusiastic participation of a large number of people who love the guitar.
This master is a completely new experience offered to graduates and professional guitarists, a unique opportunity to improve their knowledge and practice of the instrument with professors selected from the most renowned virtuosi in the world, Manuel BARRUECO, David RUSSELL, Nigel NORTH, Hopkinson SMITH, Ignacio RODES, Carles TREPAT, Roberto AUSSEL, Shin-ichi FUKUDA and conductor José DE EUSEBIO.
The guitar interpretation programs, all taught in English and Spanish, cover topics such as The vihuela and baroque guitar repertoire, The music of J.S. Bach on plucked instruments, The guitar repertoire in the nineteenth century as well as that in the twentieth century, Guitar music from South America, Concertos for guitar and orchestra, The art of transcribing for guitar, Chamber music involving guitar and Performance and conducting practice for guitar soloists. Each module takes place over an intense week where the professors work individually and collectively with students. Each week starts with a recital offered by the professor which is open to the public.
As part of the training programme, the students in the Master will have the chance to perform as soloists on several occasions at different venues in the province of Alicante, under the supervision of the master professors.
AIMS
To provide training focused on the interpretation of the guitar repertoire through one-to-one and group lessons taught by top virtuosi.
To develop technical procedures that allow mastery of the instrument.
To acquire a wide musical knowledge and to enable the application of appropriate instrumental resources.
Students can choose between two options. The first one involves a permanent residence in Alicante from January to June, living in accommodation located in the old quarter of the city especially assigned by the Alicante Town Hall. The second option allows, exceptionally, that students who cannot stay in Alicante during the entire period, reside in the city for about two weeks a month, from January to June.
Students whose native language is not Spanish may continue intensive Spanish courses at the University of Alicante, in such a way as to ensure that at the end of the master, their Spanish skills enable them to cope professionally in a language spoken by over five hundred million people.
